HYLOCEREUS UNDATUS (Haw.) Br. & R. First described by Haworth as Cereus undatus in 1830, and amended to its present name in 1909 by Britton and Rose. A tropical 3 angled climbing species from Central America. The fast growing and abundant stems have aerial roots and in age produce large handsome, white, scented nocturnal flowers. The seed berries are shiny, bright red, 3” in diameter, about 4” long and can weigh 1lb each. This species is cultivated in some tropical countries as a food crop. The edible fruits are sold in markets and offered as Dragon Fruits, bearing no spines or glochids, but a few smooth green bracts.
